Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved betting on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The real improvement in his abilities happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge one another. He was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
