In holdem, the initial step is to get the game started, and for this the players put out a certain amount of cash. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the commonly used saying for this play. In the next step, the croupier shuffles the cards and gives out 2 cards face down to all players. A normal deck of 52 cards is used. Then there is the initial sequence of wagering. This sequence is usually referred to as a "pre-flop".

Following the 1st betting round, the top card of the deck is discarded. This thrown away card is referred to as the "burn card", and this is performed to make sure that there is no corruption. The next 3 cards are then revealed face up on the table. These cards are ‘the flop’. Now follows a second round of betting, after that the croupier tosses out a further card and deals one more card onto the table. Following this, competitors can employ the sixth card to form a five-card poker hand.

A further sequence of betting follows, and in many styles of games, here is where the wager amount increases. There is an additional round of throwing away a card, and a final deal of a card face-up on the table. This is known as the "river". Competitors can now employ any of the 5 cards on the board, and/or the two cards in their hand, to assemble a 5card poker hand.

To finish it up there’s an additional round of betting. After that, all the players remaining start to display their hands. This is known as the "showdown". Beyond a doubt, the competitor who holds the best hand is the winner. When players have equal hands a splitting of the winnings is used.
